Marco Island
Marco Island is the largest and most northern of Florida's 10,000 islands. It has
a mix of single family homes and high rise condominiums. The island was developed
by the Deltona Corporation in the 1960s. Founded by the Mackle Family, Deltona gained
national notoriety for Marco Island's success as a project. The Mackle Company was
the largest homebuilder in the United States from 1958 through 1961. Although some
of the homes on Marco Island are considered "inland" because they are not directly
on the water, most single family homes are directly on a canal or waterway and have
their own boat docks with boat lifts.
There are two bridges linking Marco Island to the mainland: The Judge Jolly Bridge
(Collier Blvd / CR951) and the Goodland Bridge (SR92)
- Tigertail Beach
- Residents Beach
- South Marco Beach
In addition to the beaches on the island, a popular public beach is located on nearby Keewaydin Island.
Situated amongst the mangrove islands of southwest Florida, Marco Island certainly
is a world-class resort destination surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful,
uninhabited islands and the Gulf of Mexico. To the South lies a huge unspoilt expanse
of 10,000 Islands with miles and miles of fly fishing
heaven, inhabited only by the tiny fishing villages of Goodland, Everglades City,
Chokoloskee and eventually Flamingo. Included in this southerly stretch is Collier-Seminole
State Park, the 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Fakahatchee Strand State
Preserve, Big Cypress National Preserve and the 5000 square mile Everglades National
Park, ensuring
protection against anymore coastal development.
To the north is the Rookery
Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and its Briggs Memorial Nature Center.
